Yield Testing

You want to make informed decisions when buying printing supplies, according to your needs and your budget. When comparing costs, you need to look at a range of factors, including quality and reliability. Page yields and cost-per-page estimates are important variables to consider.

What is page yield?

Page yield is the total number of pages a user can print with a given printer and cartridge, based on certain assumptions. Previously, manufacturers used a variety of methodologies to measure cartridge yields, making it challenging to accurately compare brands. Today most major printer manufacturers work in conjunction with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to develop and create standards for measuring page yield. Details of the ISO/IEC standards are available at www.iso.org.

Measuring Monochrome Laser Toner Cartridges Yield: ISO/IEC 19752

The ISO/IEC 19752 toner cartridge yield standard for monochrome laser printers addresses a broad range of important factors that affect yield and yield measurement, including the test document, print job size, print quality modes, end-of-life determination, sample size and environmental conditions. Turbon believes that this standard brings benefits for our customers and for the printing industry. The results are documented in all our production facilities.

Measuring Color Laser Toner Cartridges Yield: ISO/IEC 19798

The ISO/IEC 19798 defines a method for testing and calculation of average yield measured in the number of standard pages for a color toner cartridge and specific printer printing in a semi-continuous mode under a defined set of conditions. It uses the test page suite defined in ISO/IEC 24712. These test pages are intended to represent some of the document types that are used in the office and home. They are not intended to represent special applications such as photo printing.

The entire line of IBM branded HP Replacement Cartridges is manufactured using international ISO 9000 certified facilities. Additionally, the manufacturing process is monitored using statistical process control to insure the highest quality in every cartridge.

Before introduction of any IBM cartridge, IBM and Turbon jointly test all IBM branded HP Replacement Cartridges in accordance with ISO 19752 for monochrome cartridges and ISO 19798 for color cartridges. These standards require a robust statistical analysis in order to declare cartridges page yield, and allow customers to have confidence in the declared yield. The ISO 19752 and ISO 19798 standards are supported by HP, Canon, Lexmark, and IBM. More information can be found at www.iso.org.
